A moment from a second grade read aloud...
"John Tubman threatened Harriet that if she tried to run away, he would tell her master."
The teacher stops and turns to her kids. "Can you believe that? And that was her husband too!"
One second grader retorted, as if she had years of relational pain behind her, "And that's why I'm never getting married."
I wonder about her pain. What would make a seven year old say that? And yet I kinda know. I think. It makes me think of the gender conference my junior year. I wish everyone could experience that kind of healing. It obviously starts young.
