Thoughts on the CSTs

State testing season is coming around and the entire school is on edge. Anxiety radiates from each teacher who stands next to our little scantron machine in the copy room, awaiting the results of their scores.

As I look at each face and bear my own results, I find myself frustrated. Can my efforts to educate and my kids' efforts to learn for the past 8 months really be measured by 3 hours of testing all in a 3-day period through 3 scantron tests that have nearly 100 questions in all? Are we testing stamina or knowledge? Are we gaging test-taking strategies or learning? Can a number really be the only credited assessment of 8 months of hard work for both my students and I?
