My principal subbed in my classroom for a bit today so that I could take some time to check out other first grade classrooms in our LA schools. I had her read decodables (books that focus on specific sound patterns) with the students. She had the kids search for all the words with our sound pattern of the day and color those patterns with a crayon. This is typical procedure, but she added a caveat which appalled my first graders... They were only allowed to use a yellow crayon to color the patterns. No independent color choice today! The kids didn't know what to do with themselves. It was as if their world was ending.
Finally, one (Denny, of course) raised his hand. "Are we only allowed to use yellow because your hair is yellow?"
I'm sure my principal cracked a smile here... "Yes, Denny. That is why you have to use yellow."
And then the class let their anger go. It all made sense to them now. Of course they had to use yellow. Duh. Why didn't they think of it earlier?
And off to their seats they went with their yellow crayon in hand to hunt for words.
